WordPress & BuddyPress?

Can we build on our WordPress foundation? It connects to a database which is helpful for other purposes. BuddyPress and plug ins seem to lay a good foundation.

Thanks Jake - looking to create a community using our databases so we need to own the data. Will continue to look at WordPress/BuddyPress as a teh "front end" on the mySQL databases.
