Fun, high-visibility project needs Rails programmers

Status:
Open
Organization:

If you know how to program Ruby on Rails and would like to be involved in a high-visibility project, then we could use your help.

Happy Fridays is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit dedicated to being the most efficient fund-raising organization on the planet. We've developed a very innovative approach to raising money for other worthy causes: we let people have fun. We've already earned the respect and support of some of the most-respected and most-efficient non-profit organizations in the world and we're building steam every day.

Our flagship website is nearly ready for launch, but we've got big plans for the future and we're going to need help. The user experience is designed for mass appeal, which means we need to be prepared for lots of traffic. As such we could use help with stuff like:
- help deploy/launch the site
- be our lead programmer and help coordinate the entire open source development effort for Happy Fridays.
- curate the our repository on github
- optimize our existing system
- fix bugs
- build new features
- create fun flash games for people to play and share with their friends

You can check out our teaser site at http://happyfridays.org to read a bit more about us.

Hi! The scope of this

Hi! The scope of this request is too large for DayOn. You really want someone in a paid position (potentially more than one) for this. Good luck!

Marketing Approach

When visiting your preview site, I'm presented with an animation of a woman removing her shirt.

While that might be "fun" for some, for others it will be distasteful, and for others, a continuation of the general sexual degradation of women. Do you plan to continue such themes in your site? Will that approach support the participation you seek?

Where is the project vetting?

I recently signed up to potentially volunteer after hearing about Day On at the OpenSource Bridge Conference. After looking at the top project in the list, I'm wondering if there is any vetting process going on?

This project in particular is really not what I expected. Particularly given the blatant objectification of women used to represent "fun." Big turn-off, from the project and subsequently Day On. (I visited the website.)

I recommend you remove Happy Friday's from the "Requests from Help" project list.

vetting at Day On

While we may agree with you about the appropriateness of this particular project (see our earlier comment above), we don't want to put Day On in the business of censoring projects that may be valid nonprofit efforts, even if they do not present themselves well. Most of all, Day On does not have the time or resources to vet all requests to a high degree.

Accordingly, we would recommend a caveat emptor approach, where volunteers spend some time getting to know the organizations or individuals they may help before they dive in.

In this case, comments previous to yours identified possible issues with this specific request, which should serve as a warning sign.

We would remove anything that were clearly spam or inappropriate requests for help.
