Geeks Day On 2009

Our first Geeks Day On rocked the house!

Over 50 people participated in our first Day On event, despite being created only one week ago. At CubeSpace, we had a high geek-to-nonprofit ratio, but demonstrated that Portland's geek community (plus a few choice outsiders) is ready, willing and able to help good causes with their geekly needs.

Nonprofit attendees reported great satisfaction with the geekly advice and assistance they received. You can review the questions nonprofits were asking and the complete list of expertise and needs categories entered by Day On participants.

Looking ahead, we identified the key ingredients to sustain Day On:

  • Engage nonprofits
  • Build community through face-to-face events
  • Help broker relationships between volunteers and nonprofits
  • Keep low barriers for entry, for volunteers and nonprofits

We'll be looking to you to help us shape how Day On can maintain focus on these key efforts. Comment here to start the dialog.

One thing is clear: Day On will continue to exist. Nonprofits should keep entering their requests for assistance and volunteers should stay tuned for ways they can help.

Make sure to check out the many ways you can subscribe to stay in touch with Day On activities.

Thanks!

Geeks Day was fantastic!

As a non-geek seeking to learn more about social media I received a ton of individualized and top notch attention! One of the volunteers (Yuentue (spelling may be wrong, my apologies) spent nearly an hour getting me organized on over a half-dozen different sites. Very much appreciated!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers-
